Interning with the Project and Change Management Team: Dynamic, Engaging and Invaluable...
Intern: An elusive, exciting and sometimes daunting word that most university students have or will encounter at some point when completing their degree.
Morgan McKinley: A professional, vibrant and extremely welcoming company that provides an invaluable opportunity to gain professional corporate experience and opportunity for career progression.
In mid 2017 I was fortunate enough to gain an internship within the Projects and Change Management team at Morgan McKinley. With the goal of gaining corporate work experience in mind, combined with time between returning from exchange and re-commencing university study, the Projects and Change Management team provided me with an invaluable insight into how the world of professional recruitment worked.
Unsure of what to expect when I stumbled across Morgan McKinley, I was reassured throughout both the application process and induction to the office that I had made a great choice for my internship. From day one of working within the Projects and Change Management team, I was able to realise that the work I was about to complete would be of value to both myself and the team as a whole. Morgan McKinley’s culture of hard work and achieving success for clients was increasingly evident each day I came into the office, and job satisfaction quickly became a term I could resonate with. The flexible working environment that was offered and actively promoted, allowed me to pick my hours for the week: whether that was working full time or taking breaks to engage in pre-planned commitments.
The modern CBD office of open cubicles combined with Senior Managers working alongside myself and the rest of the Projects Team, enabled me to comfortably interact with both my own and other teams in a supportive and friendly environment. No question was ever too much of an ask, and the ability to swing my chair around and ask for help with finding search codes, enquiring into jargon used or simply having a laugh was something that made me excited to go into the office each day.
No one day at Morgan McKinley was ever the same. The aid of having my own email address and calendar allowed me to organise the key events of my week on a rolling basis. This gave myself and the rest of the team structure and confidence that the work I was completing would be actively adding value to Morgan McKinley as an international company. On any given day I would see myself shadowing interviews with candidates, researching and updating contact profiles of candidates, or sitting in on training with members of other teams in the office. The diverse nature of the work and training offered by Morgan McKinley was incredible and far exceeded my expectations. The intern program is extremely well structured, and the reflection of tasks completed through the week gave me confidence that I was meeting the required professional standard. Weekly meetings with my manager, Jonty Plewes, enabled me to assess my progress towards my goals as an intern, talk about my work within the team and reflect on tasks and experiences that I liked and disliked.
The work I was assigned gave me personal ownership of projects, and the Google suite that Morgan McKinley utilises allowed my supervisors to assess and give real time constructive feedback. Furthermore, I thrived on being surrounded by intelligent professionals who were extremely knowledgeable in areas such as finance, commerce and heavy industry. I was also fortunate enough to meet and freely engage with senior managers from both the Singapore and UK offices when they were in the Sydney office for end of financial year meetings.
Overall, my time within the Projects and Change Management team at Morgan McKinley has been invaluable, exciting and lots of fun. The skills I have learnt through the training provided and the tasks I completed have provided me with a wealth of new knowledge about the world of recruitment and corporate environments as a whole. I would like to extend a special mention to Jonty Plewes, Chris Eggleston, Eloise Seidelin, Joanne Clossick, Lucy Glover and Rebecca Cooper for being so welcoming, helpful and supportive throughout the duration of my internship. I would highly recommend to any student who is looking for corporate experience to apply as an intern at Morgan McKinley, as it is a friendly, young and vibrant company that equips interns with skills they will use for the duration of their studies and professional careers.
