Last week, during the school half term, fifteen Morgan McKinley Consultants went down to Aviva Investors to join fifty sixth form students to take part in an 'Insight day' into the world of investment management, hosted by Investment 2020.
Ahead of a networking lunch where students would meet prospective employers from Legal and General Investment Management, Schroders, Colombia Threadneedle, and GAM to name a few (full list here), we were tasked with helping the students master the art of a good first impression and elevator pitch introduction to kick-start conversations.
The session commenced with some of the theory and reasons behind why networking is so important nowadays before moving onto some role plays and examples of how best to carry yourself when meeting someone - clear eye contact, a firm but not bone-crushing handshake and smile.
We then moved onto the importance of open questions, reminding them that everyone loves talking about themselves so it's important to make that happen with your questions.
Finally, after the students had drafted their elevator pitches it was time to put them into practice! They began networking around the room, with Morgan McKinley Consultants giving advice and tips along the way. It was great to see everyone up on their feet creating an almighty buzz. The students were immensely impressive, focused and determined; some wanted to move onto university, others move into an apprenticeship or some were thinking of going straight into work and it was a pleasure to network with them and get to know them all better.
We wish everyone the best in their decision making and hope that we've given them that bit more confidence when going out into the world. Thank you again to Karis Stander and the team at Investment 2020 for having us, we had a great morning!
