Thomas Kirkman reflects on his first week at Morgan McKinley (London).
I’ve just completed my first week at Morgan McKinley. The start of the week saw me, inevitably, feeling nervous about meeting my new colleagues and embracing a new career in the Public Practice team. It turns out that I needn’t have worried as everyone on the desk was exceptionally nice, eager to help and excellent at what they do. This level of professionalism appears to also run throughout the entire Morgan McKinley business, and I found everyone to be very friendly and welcoming as I worked my way around the office.
So, as I previously mentioned, I have joined the Public Practice team which has meant that my week has been spent trying to get my head around new terms such as ACA, ACCA, FRS102 and SORP, whilst simultaneously trying to learn what an Audit Senior is and what they do. I have been ably assisted by the Senior Consultants on my team, Sinead Byrne and Nicholas Nicou, who have been patient with my constant questioning and have passed a wealth of knowledge onto me.
My days have worked around a pretty tight schedule learning about everything from Linkedin to all the systems we use at work to the basic skills of recruitment. Each different aspect of it seems confusing to begin with but over the course of the week they have all come together to fit into a master plan.
My personal highlight of the week was my first opportunity to get on the phone myself and try to generate some professionals for potential roles, after spending time auditing CVs. I must admit to feeling pretty nervous before making my first call and for the first 20 minutes or so I was content carefully studying several company websites. However, I eventually decided that I was going to have to take the plunge and make my first call. Perhaps unsurprisingly in the recruitment industry this call went to voicemail, as did the next few calls, but eventually I got through to two people and managed to find a couple of quality professionals which I passed on to the rest of the team.
So to sum up my first week at Morgan McKinley I have to say the culture here is fantastic, everyone is incredibly professional whilst at the same time being very friendly and the training given at Morgan McKinley is fantastic. I am really enjoying learning and looking forward to my second week at work. I can’t wait to see what they have planned for me.
