In February this year the IT department decided to do their part for MMK Million and fundraise for the Conquer Cancer Charity.
We needed to come up with an event that would be a stretch, that would challenge us and would raise as much money as possible for a cause that has affected all of us in some shape or form (be it family or friends). We looked at Bake offs, Charity runs etc, but set our sights on the Musgrave Charity Triathlon based in the beautiful Farran Wood near Cork city, Ireland.
This triathlon is a race that involves a Swim, a Bike leg and a Run. We opted to compete as a relay so we decided to enter three teams, two as relay and one team as an individual competitor.
After months of training, three nervous souls lined up on the bank of the River Lee to swim 800m alongside 140 other competitors. The swim was 400m out into the channel, around a marker and 400m back to shore. Alan Barry, completing his first ever open water swim, Rosemary Ryan and myself completed the swim and passed the baton onto Michael O'Connor and Leo Babic on the bikes. The Cyclists had to begin by running 1km to their bikes and then it was a timed trial for 20km on an extremely hilly route.
Our cyclists handed over to the runners (Mairead Murphy and Dave Herlihy), who had to run 5k in the hilly woods and race to the finish line to complete the triathlon.
Everyone made it back in one piece and even the sun was out to celebrate!
