Like thousands of Irish people before me and after me, way back in October 2007, I made the decision to move to Australia.
At this time, I was living in a pre-recession bubble of well-paid roles and little fear of not being able to secure a new role should I leave one. My reasons for leaving Ireland, in comparison to those who left in the following years were probably somewhat different. I know people still leave for the lifestyle, weather etc, however, in the following years the biggest push would have been the lack of employment and opportunities.
So I went, I saw, I surfed and I had a great time, working continuously for the two and a half years I was there. Unlike most of my emigrated pals I made the decision to return to my homeland in early 2010. People thought I was mad – they wondered what I would be going home to. Even though we were in our Australia bubble, everyone I knew had family members or friends being affected by the recession at home. However, I luckily secured a role when I got home and I have been in employment since.
Working in the recruitment industry I have seen a massive increase in the number of Irish coming home from Australia, New Zealand, Canada, etc. People are making the decision to move home, typically for personal reasons and are seeing first hand that there are roles here, particularly in the recruitment sector. I work on the Talent Acquisition team in Morgan McKinley and have met with some excellent recruiters who have built up fantastic experience abroad and have come home to find a very buoyant recruitment market.
Here at Morgan McKinley we are currently hiring for recruiters at all levels, for multiple divisions across our Irish offices. So, if you are contemplating a move home or have made the decision to build your career in Ireland please get in touch. Sausages, Barry’s Tea, Taytos, winter and a new job await you!
