5 reasons why being a recruiter is like being a researcher

You might be aware that across Dublin and London, companies like Google, Facebook, Air BnB, Twitter, etc (the list is endless really) are looking to hire very talented people to join their recruitment teams.

But the thing is, they’re not just looking for your standard recruiter. Oh no, they don’t want the person who relies on job boards or the boom and bash of sales calls. Instead, they are looking for a very rare type of recruiter, also known as the research recruiter. You may say this is a mythical creature, but I kid you not, they exist. They are the person who is tech-savvy and know what an exchange engineer does, and if need be, they could hop on a laptop and stop an entire website from crashing. They are also the person who is a strong logical thinker and has an understanding of Boolean searching.

This morning, as I was sipping my coffee, trying to figure out where I am going to find these people.  I had my eureka moment. Researchers are effectively the same thing as a recruiter. Here is why:

Market Mapping

Like recruiters, researchers are tasked with mapping their relevant markets to see what resources are in abundance and what is scarce.

Data Searching

Like any good research student or researcher, recruiters need to apply Boolean logic to their data searching to find the best possible professionals available for clients.

Industry Knowledge

Again, if you speak to a tech recruiter about a software developer role, you can be sure they will know what the job is about. Similarly, if you asked a market researcher about trends in Java, they could recite the different nuances of the product.

Target Driven

When a researcher is given a task, they have to complete it by a certain date and time. Recruiters are the same as they are measured by how many jobs they fill.

Hunger for Knowledge

Recruiters are constantly striving for market intelligence, be it the newest professionals seeking new roles or new companies entering the market. Researchers by their very essence are the same and strive to be on point when it comes to their industry.

Are you a researcher? Heard of Boolean logic? Looking for your next step? Why not consider a career in recruitment?
