Last Saturday 7th May, 120,000 people in Ireland gathered in the early hours of the morning to walk, jog or run 5k at the annual ‘Darkness into Light’ event in aid of Pieta House.
Over 500 people commit suicide in Ireland every year. Many more live in darkness and despair where self harm and depression is normal life. Pieta house is a fantastic charity that helps support people battling with depression, self harm and suicidal thoughts.
In Morgan McKinley we are holding a number of events in recognition of Mental Health awareness month in May. The darkness into light run was attended by over 50 Morgan McKinley colleagues from across Ireland in various locations. The feedback from all that participated was so positive that we hope to take this global in Morgan McKinley next year!
At 3.30am on Saturday morning I headed off to Marlay park and was greeted by thousands of people of all ages coming together to support this great cause. It was an emotional scene, with many people hugging, writing messages on the ‘banner of hope’ and remembering loved ones they have lost. Families, friends and colleagues walked together, supporting those who have battled through their darkest times with the help of charities like Pieta house.
There was a fantastic atmosphere at the event, one of hope and positivity and as we walked and chatted and a new day dawned, I felt a sense of exhilaration that we had made this journey together in support of all those that find it hard to see the light.
